Innovation is crucial to the survival of any industry, especially at this moment in history. The crisis we are facing requires particularly innovative use of resources and technologies to enable us to safeguard our economy while preserving public health. In the context of this global situation, the National Innovation Fund, approved long before the crisis, appears particularly significant in the 2019 Italian Budget Law with a starting budget of around one billion Euros.
How the National Innovation Fund works
The
National Innovation Fund uses
Venture Capital, which means that it operates through investment in the capital of the companies that access it. Investments can be both direct and indirect and are made through different types of funds (vertical, general, etc.). The types of companies that can access these investments also vary,
ranging from startups to innovative SMEs.

Protecting Italian excellence
One of the reasons that led to the establishment of the
National Innovation Fund was the need to
counter the constant dispersion of talent and innovation that our country has witnessed for years. In the absence of sufficient resources for them to prosper, the best Italian innovators found themselves almost compelled to sell their assets, both tangible and intangible, to foreign companies that were ready to invest in them. For the country, this system represented an unacceptable loss in terms of
resources, possibilities, and progress. To maintain the excellence of Italy's most innovative entrepreneurship, we needed to
provide them with the resources they required to grow.
Innovation, leadership, and inclusiveness
The
National Innovation Fund is based on several key principles, such as the idea that
innovation should be encouraged and endorsed. This applies to citizens as well as to businesses and territories, as innovation generates growth at all levels. The aim is to make
Italy establish and confirm itself as a paragon of competence, success, and quality. Innovation depends on crucial factors contributing to the progress of the whole country, such as
social mobility and the internationalisation of companies. Innovation is also about
connecting, bringing together, including public and private stakeholders strategically. In the case of the National Innovation Fund, all these operations take place under the aegis of the
Cassa Depositi e Prestiti.
