Helping businesses on the path to sustainability - interview with Lorenzo Orlandi of Locom

How can companies operate sustainably? In order to minimise the environmental impact of any business, it is important to plan for and understand different aspects of environmental issues. Many companies, while keen to make sustainable choices, do not have the knowledge or the expertise to navigate a complex system in which every action, every manufacturing choice, and every commercial operation has far-reaching consequences that are not always easy to predict. This is why there are companies that specialise in sustainability consulting. One of these is Locom, an Italian company that focuses on the study of sustainability in connection with business management and events. We interviewed Lorenzo Orlandi, Locom's managing director, to discuss what companies can do to reduce their environmental footprint.

What does Locom do? Which projects do you advise clients on?

LOCOM is a consultancy firm for sustainable business and event management. We support clients in designing sustainable development strategies, also with reference to the 2030 Agenda.

How do you approach the issue of sustainability?

ESG issues are cross-cutting and encompass many aspects of a company’s life. We always start with careful context analysis and gaining an understanding of the existing expertise from previous engagements. We consult with Management in order to evaluate actions from a sustainability perspective and suggest solutions for sustainable development.

You have focused specifically on event sustainability: in your experience, what are the key steps to make an event sustainable?

The planning stage is crucial to the development of sustainable event management. Predicting the impact of our actions helps prevent the waste of valuable resources. Each event has its own characteristics and requires a specific analysis, the Manager's commitment and the monitoring of operations with a view to improvement must drive the whole project.

What could advance the debate on sustainability, favouring the achievement of the SDGs at national and international level?

The debate is under way, but we must move beyond talk and start acting. And to do this we need culture, knowledge, will, long-term vision. Awareness of the unsustainability of the current development model will lead to a paradigm shift, but action is needed now!
